It's a moment West Park Healthcare Centre staff, patients and the community have long been anticipating — the chance to transform healthcare delivery to meet the care needs of the next generation. The specialized rehabilitation and complex continuing care hospital launched its centre- wide, Functional Programming phase in September. This critical phase will provide architects with a clear understanding of how West Park's new Patient Care Centre will deliver its future care and the architectural requirements to support it. "Functional Programming lays the foundation for the function and design of West Park's new and renovated facilities," says Shelley Ditty, Vice-President of Planning and Development. "We have to get it 'right' now because the final product will be based on this important stage." Functional Programming is the second of five stages in Ontario's capital planning process. West Park is required to submit to the provincial government a Functional Program, a document describing what we do and what we require in our new facilities to deliver services. It includes information on future patient volumes, staffing, essential adjacencies and space requirements. To develop a comprehensive Functional Program, West Park has engaged a Planning, Design and Compliance (PDC) team to help capture the knowledge and insight of staff, physicians, patients and family members from across the hospital. It involves user group meetings, focus groups, surveys, researching best practices, and more.
