West Park's Cart Washer

June 10, 2014
It may be out of sight, but it's not out of mind where infection control and patient safety are concerned. Occupying a large section of West Park's Central Supply Room (CSR), the cart washer washes/sterilizes everything from large carts to the smallest pieces of equipment and many things in between, including wheelchairs. Acquired in 2012, the cart washer at West Park was one of the first in Canada. The washer is state-of the-art and improves on older technology by sterilizing in addition to washing. "This unit has steam injection, unlike our old machine," says Mike Frost, CSR Supervisor. "It's more efficient and can clean roughly 8-10 loads a day. It can wash greater quantities and new types of things." Equipment is first cleaned by hand by CSR assistants and then run through a 17-minute cycle that includes washing, sterilizing and drying.
